BUNDLE incorporates several different components folded into a literal “bundle” of knowledge: Cree oral teachings and a song; a poetic zine that combines intersectional feminist and Cree histories and prophecies; cedar and tobacco medicines; a robin print on birch-bark; and photo images connected to people and place.
This project is the result of years of conversations, collaborations and learnings between different Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and friends from several Treaty 6 nations in Alberta and Saskatchewan— Onion Lake Cree Nation, Big River First Nation, Saddle Lake Cree Nation — and communities across Canada and around the world. Respect for Indigenous knowledge and data sovereignty has informed this co-creation grounded in intercultural knowledge sharing.
Ruth Beer, Kurtis McAdam, Patrick Mahon, Janice Makokis, and Sheena Wilson. Additional contributions by Sharmistha Kar, and Barbara Mahon, who co-constructed the large hanging banner for the ‘Bundle’ installations at both the Prototypes for Possible Worlds and Unpacking Energy Transition exhibitions, and Patricia Makokis, who designed and sewed the kit-version of the bundles. Various knowledge keepers and Elders shared oral teachings and prophesies, including the team's own Kurtis McAdam and Janice Makokis, as well as Clarence Whitestone, Diana Steinhauer, and a song by the late Francis McAdam.
Bundle is accompanied by audio recordings (available via QR code) of Indigenous teachings on seven important topics.
